We hear a lot about eating clean, reading, and understanding the labels of the foods we put into our bodies, but what about the quality of what is ingested through your skin? Is your moisturizer clean? Can you recognize and pronounce the ingredients in your moisturizers and face creams? Do you get the results you're looking for from your current product? If you notice the products you're using are not only lacking in effectiveness but may even be causing some irritation, it might be time to reevaluate what you are putting on your skin.

What are the best ways to choose a moisturizer that is clean?

EWG (Environmental Working Group) is a great resource to start educating yourself about individual ingredients. Clean moisturizers are free from common ingredients found in beauty and skincare products that are actually quite toxic. Aluminum, phthalates, synthetic fragrances, and dyes to name a few are often found in products that are being marketed to help with an array of skin problems when in fact, for many, this could be the root cause for some of their skincare issues.

Look for companies that not only market the quality of their ingredients but also how they source and package their products. Most companies that prioritize the ingredients also have high standards for every step in the production process.  Look for products with labels that state to be both ‘cruelty-free and vegan’, it means it was not tested on animals and it does not contain animal products or ingredients.

What other important things should one keep in mind?

An extremely strong scent and extremely bold colors could mean synthetic fragrances, perfumes, and dyes are being used. Clean products will have either no scent or a light natural scent derived from the plant ingredients. Remember not every product works for every skin type. Look for products with descriptions that benefit your particular needs. You can find collections for individual skin types in the skincare menu.
