Conventional diaper creams are full of toxic chemicals, and with a product that is frequently used, toxins can quickly accumulate in your little one. Your babies' skin is thinner and more delicate than that of adults, which means these chemicals are often absorbed at a higher rate than they would be in an adult's skin.
Not only are conventional diaper creams harmful to your baby's skin, but they have harmful effects on the environment as well. Many of the chemicals commonly found in diaper cream ingredients are unsafe for marine life. These Chemicals bioaccumulate which can cause lasting damage. There are many reasons to make the switch to a clean, safe, and effective diaper cream.
Diaper creams can cause skin irritation just like diapers. Some of the most toxic chemicals found in diaper creams are:
1,4-dioxane
This is a byproduct of manufacturing processes and can be found in ingredients such as PEG, PPG, and Ceteareth-20.
Fragrance
This generic term can cover many toxins, including parabens, phthalates, and other highly irritating chemicals.
Lanolin
This fat is naturally found on the skins of sheep and can irritate babies' skin. It is recommended to avoid this ingredient while their skin is so delicate. If you choose to use a product with this ingredient down the road, consider a small patch test on older children to determine if they are sensitive to it.
Petroleum/petrolatum/mineral oil
These fossil-fuel-derived ingredients are used in diaper creams as moisture barriers. Bad for the planet and bad for babies' skin. These ingredients can worsen diaper rash by blocking pores and sealing in the irritants.
Sulfates
These surfactants (stabilizes mixtures) and detergents aren't always found in diaper creams but may be present in some brands. They can cause skin irritations such as diaper rash and sensitivity.
Unspecified Preservatives
This term, like fragrance, can refer to a range of chemicals, both natural and artificial. Even if they prevent a product from spoiling, these chemicals can cause skin irritation. Formaldehyde is another well-known carcinogen.
Although it might seem simple to choose a diaper cream, brands love to use eye-catching buzzwords to make their products stand out from the rest. An effective and safe natural diaper cream requires only a few ingredients. These basic ingredients provide moisture protection, nourishment for skin, and healing herbs such as calendula. Look for these types of ingredients at the top of the ingredient list.
Organic and Natural Ingredients
You want a diaper cream that is all-natural, with few ingredients, and ideally with certifications. The natural, organic diaper lotion can be used to calm angry and irritated skin. It will also make your baby happier.
